I saw myself today.
She stood on
the steps,
awaiting,
a bus headed
east or west.
Bright curls shielding her face,
bouncing and in wind
back forth the
like mine

single
hand
held

phone
that was this
moment of her life.
And I wondered:
was her face
a veneer
like mine?
her laughter
pallid
like mine?
her smile
false
like mine?
her core
empty
like mine?
Or warm vibrant
bright happy
like mine
seemed to be
No words were spoken.
No contact was made.
No stories were shared.
Did I miss the chance to talk to
me?
I left her
there
on the
stairs
for a bus
traveling
east or west
wondering
did she question
where I was going too?
